Of Backs and Weddings
My apologies for not posting more often recently. As usual, there’s a combination of reasons. First of all, I have been continuing to move boxes of all kinds into my apartment and unload them. This caused the next reason: Despite lifting correctly, I threw my back out.
I half woke up Friday night when pain in my back caused me to need to turn over. Doing so, the pain became much worse, and I was almost unable to turn over onto my back, but doing so caused the pain to cease, so I fell back into slumber. Upon waking Saturday morning I tried to roll out of bed, and found myself almost completely unable too. After 5 minutes of trying to stand up, I finally decided to crawl to the bathroom, and grab my cell phone on the way.
And let me note that this wasn’t ordinary crawling. I actually needed to scoot my knees forward to push my back and hands forward, rather than having my hands create any kind of pulling. I also had to push things out of the way. About ten minutes later I managed to stand up, having already assumed a sitting position, and was able to keep my back strait after getting my feet under me.
This also happened to be the day of my Father’s wedding. After about 2-3 hours of alternately heating and icing my back, I managed to get my things together, get in my car, and drive to another location for help getting into my suit, then get there in time to stand beside my father for his wedding. I have been trying to take care of my back for the entire rest of the weekend. I will be going in to work tomorrow. I am very glad that I got a hot pad and a ice pad to alternate, and that there are a microwave and freezer at the apartment and at work.
As for the wedding, it was a small, but lovely service, followed by a reception where I got to speak to family members who came in all the way from California. I got my father a grilling set and a thermometer with a digital read out and a wire leading to the sensor, so he can measure meat temperature without opening his grill. I got his new wife a bamboo cutting board and an immersion blender.

It could have been worse. Try explaining to your boss that you threw your back out with a sneeze. The doctor took me seriously. My boss at the time… not so much so.
I’m just glad that you were able to make it to the wedding. Best wishes to your Dad and his lady.

one word: “Ouch”…I remember when my back went out over one summer, two weeks of a hot pad and shuffling around, and finally it got better. Threw it out because of my backpack in High School.

Ouch. Sorry to hear about your respective back throwing experiences, but the condolences help.
I was able to take it more or less easy for 2 days, and my back is starting to feel better now.
