As I let you all know in a previous post, I’ll be moving to my apartment over the next few days. I don’t yet have cable installed in it, and I don’t know how long it will take to get it set up, so I may be off line for several days.

I will hopefully be able to get my computer systems set up and ready for the installation, so that it won’t take any extra time past receiving the modem in the mail, and the service being turned on.

For those that don’t know, if your home is already wired for cable, Cox allows you the option of wiring your computer and TVs to the walls yourself. Thus, instead of charging you $50 for the service of wiring things up for you, they charge you $20 for a “home installation pack” for your computer.

The pack includes a rather lengthy extension cord, a splitter, and two additional coax cables, one of which is intended to lead to your cable router, the other of which is meant to go to a TV, after you split the signal through the splitter. In addition, it includes software they want you to install on your computer.

First off, my apartment actually has several cable jacks, and I won’t be needing to do any splitting. Hopefully this will improve signal quality somewhat. Still, additional coax, and a splitter is nice to have on hand, and they include a cupon to get a discount on your second month’s service so that it winds up being free.

As for the software, I honestly wouldn’t recommend that anyone ever install it. I personally am going to be using a router to connect all of my computers to the internet, thus proving an additional level of security.
