Now on Godaddy

Earlier today one of my friends asked me what the heck was up with my blog, and some of my other friends have already heard the howls of my frustration, and the gnashing of my teeth. That, combined with the new adds, leads me to believe that a post about the changes is likely warranted.

Until recently, I’ve had free hosting on my workplace’s server. However I’ll be starting a new job soon, which means I’ll be leaving the old one. Unfortunately that means I needed to either find a new hosting service, or pony up the $30 a month that businesses pay for hosting (and quarterly updates). Since I wouldn’t be using the quarterly updates, and I’m still getting my blog and site how I want them, that’s hardly cost efficient for me.

Because of this fact I moved my site over to GoDaddy, and am currently taking advantage of their free hosting until I have my site setup, or until I find better free hosting - possibly with my ISP, or my job. This hosting is payed for by the adds and searches you see at the top of the page. This also resulted in the many problems you may have noticed as I got my blog set up over here.

I started out by using the “Hosting Metropolis” option to install WordPress automatically, not aware that I could install everything manually. I then backed up my blog and other files, and uploaded them to the new site. I then set my domain (joshtheaspie.com) to point to GoDaddy’s servers. Suddenly all of the posts on my blog disappeared, resulting in the “What’s up with your Blog?” response from a friend.

Next I tried to import my old blog posts, and it seemed to work… until you tried to click on any links.

So I set about installing everything myself from scratch, after I got a tip from the people at GoDaddy’s support. Unlike the automatically installed WordPress installations, I also retain complete control over all my database options with the exception of host name and the installation. I also get full control over the installation. Unfortunately there seemed to be some problems with many of the files the first time I uploaded them - using the ‘binary’ upload option. I changed the upload option to “Auto” and re-uploaded, and now everything seems to be working out alright.

I’ll be checking over the pages today and tomorrow, and then if everything checks out I’ll let the people at my current work place that we can remove my hosting information from the server.
