What if someone wanted to remove a part of your brain?

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Recently, in a political sub forum I’ve posted in on and off for work, someone proposed the idea that the government should perform lobotomies on violent criminals in order to “protect society.” She preached the view that the rights of the many always outweigh the rights of the few, and that criminals take away people’s rights every day, so it’s acceptable to take away any and all of their rights we choose too.

I disagree strongly with this statement.

While I was out and about posting to forums at work I found the following video. I actually do this as a part of my job, I wasn’t shirking my duties.

Server Move

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Sorry about any problems you may have had with my blog. The company that I host her with was doing a server change over, and there were some problems with the change over that caused the server not to be able to serve the blog’s scripts correctly, but everything is working fine now.

New Blog, New Chair, New Computer

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Here I sit, writing in my new blog, sitting on a recently reupholstered chair, writing an entry into my new blog!

As you can probably guess, I have recently completed installing my computer. At the moment she’s running like a dream, and with only one window open I feel the power… not being used.

When I get home today I’ll definitely need to put Kusanagi-san here through her paces, and test her out using various pieces of software. First two pieces of software out the door to test her with will be Adobe Photoshop, and StarCraft. From there, I’ll move on to other games and pieces of enterprise software.

She LIVES! I think.

My computer is currently installing windows, after having formatted the new partition over night. Hopefully by the time I get home from work tonight I’ll have a fully functioning (if low on software) computer. I may need to select a few more options and wait a bit longer, but it looks like my computer is on the verge of being fully installed.

As a part of the installation, I had to name my computer (pick a network name). Now for me, the Christening of a computer is a very important stage of the Install, as the entire feel of the computer, the display theme, ect, can be influenced by the PC’s name. How you treat the computer, and how others do as well may be unconsciously affected.

There we go

Windows set up continually said nvrdx64.sys was corrupted. The reason for it was that I kept selecting the 64 bit version of the drivers… while trying to install a 32 version of windows (All versions of windows home edition are 32 bit). Once I realized this and put together a disk for 32 bit, things started working, much better.

At the moment, I’m formatting the partition on my RAID 5 array, which will wind up being just under 1 full Terrabyte. I’ve got 3 different hard drives that were billed at 500 GB, set up.

Well, there’s been progress…

… but I’m not there yet.

I’m still working on the RAID array, unfortunately I have to do it in a rather indirect manner.

The hard drives are all SATA, and when setting up a RAID array in XP, that means several additional steps.

Bleach

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

One of my weekly rituals has become watching the anime BLEACH on cartoon network at the same time as one of my online friends Ryvaken. I introduced him to the anime, telling him he’d probably like it, and at the moment he is such a Fanatic of the show, it’s almost scary. He counts down… in seconds till the show starts.

One of the best parts of this ritual has become the part where, together, we speculate about what may or may not happen, or be true about the series. I watched some of it before it was Dubbed, so I’m ahead of the current arc in Bleach.

On the way, but not there yet

I’ve gotten all of the basic components installed in the computer, but the RAID 5 that was set up before I bought the components seems to be having trouble when I boot windows. I haven’t had a chance to run FDISK due to not having a floppy installed. I tried repairing windows, but the setup CD won’t recognize the SATA drives. I knew it wouldn’t ahead of time, but just wanted to check. I need to borrow my younger brothers DVD+Floppy computer to put together an FDISK disk, and use the motherboard’s DVD to create a floppy that will contain the SATA drivers I need to repair or reinstall windows.

He’s not home at the moment, and neither he, nor my Father are answering their phones, so I’ll have to wait till tomorrow so that I can contact them, as I’m not going to use his computer without his permission. In the mean time I’m going to do some coding, and get some RP in before I install a floppy drive in my new computer, and then clean up my room from the mess of working on the computer.

My New Computer

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

I’m currently working on putting together the first PC That I have built myself. It’s got an ASUS Crosshair motherboard, and an AMD A2 slot 64 bit dual core FX processor. It also has 2 gigs of RWM. I’m planning on putting the computer together with a RAID 5 array, although this means I’ll either need a floppy drive installed in the thing or, if I’m lucky, I’ll be able to use a jump drive in one of it’s many USB slots.

The current problem I’m working through is that the Crosshair has an 8 pin CPU supplementary power slot, with 4 pins capped off, and the PS only has a 4 pin supplementary CPU power plug, but it will fit in the side that’s not capped off. It’s taking a chance, but I’m going to attempt to use the existing PS.
